Sport News – Presuming there’s a 2020 season, the video game on the field might look extremely different

If a 2020 MLB season comes to pass, then the video game on the field may look unrecognizable to longtime fans of the video game at the big league level. Already it seems likely that a universal DH and advertising on jerseys will be in location, and if players and owners reach a negotiated settlement on the structure of the 2020 season then the playoffs would likely expand to 16 teams. Now Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the two sides have talked about the possibility of games ending in ties and changing the format of additional innings.

Nightengale writes:

” The two sides concurred in their proposition this week, obtained by U.S.A. TODAY Sports, that they will embrace the minor-league guideline in 2020 that every inning after the ninth will begin with a runner on 2nd base. In the postseason, games will revert back to standard guidelines.

” The union also wishes to go over with MLB the possibility of altering the substitution rules in extra innings, allowing gamers to re-enter the video game among other possibilities.”

Must MLB and the gamers decide to progress with the season– and must the COVID-19 pandemic permit it to be played– then the calendar will be a compressed one, likely with couple of off days and multiple arranged doubleheaders. As such, something like a 17- inning night game might seriously complicate matters. These actions would help avoid such a scenario.

As Nightengale notes, however, such changes might be thought about beyond the 2020 season, however for now just 2020 is being talked about. MLB will not be flying blind with these measures, as the affiliated minor leagues have begun each extra inning with a runner on 2nd base. Per Nightengale, that change has actually currently been accepted, and possibly calling regular season games ties after a specific variety of innings would provide another layer of “defense” versus those five- and six-hour slogs that appear multiple times per year.

Taking such steps for 2020 is definitely reasonable given the schedule restrictions, but traditionalists will likely press back if these modifications are made permanent.
