Entertainment News – How BET pulled off the awards show we all needed

Entertainment News –

(CNN) The BET Awards have actually always showcased Black America’s entertainment and culture, however, in the middle of a global pandemic and racial justice movement, this year was various.

Jesse Collins acted as executive producer for Sunday’s BET Awards, held essentially due to the Covid-19 crisis.
Opening with a rousing remix of the general public Enemy hit “Battle the Power and ending with a moving rendition of “Something Has to Break” from gospel artists Kierra Sheard and Karen Clark-Sheard, the BET Awards struck a note for every single state of mind fit to the times in which we are living.
Collins informed CNN the poignancy was purposeful, but went beyond even his expectations.
” Everybody in their own imaginative way made a statement,” stated Collins. “They made a declaration that change required to occur. We always want the program to reflect what the culture is feeling and as best we can to summarize it into a three-hour broadcast. Everyone stepped up.”
Collins, who is also creator and chief executive officer of Jesse Collins Entertainment, said there was cooperation between the artists and the program to produce resonant performances.
Rapper Da Baby’s declaration was an overt critique of cops cruelty, reenacting the death of George Floyd while in the custody of the Minneapolis cops throughout his performance of “Rockstar,” including Roddy Ricch.
Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and Alicia Keys also provided psychological efficiencies reflective of the Black Lives Matter motion.
Collins said the goal was to “lean in.”
” Lean in, make the declaration and let’s find imaginative methods to do it throughout the night,” he stated. “So that, that’s what we tried to do.”
Collins said they started thinking of imaginative solutions to the production obstacles triggered by the pandemic months ago.
” I think in the spring we just kind of recognized that, you understand, contrary to [what] management [was saying] Covid was not disappearing,” he explained. “The infection was still– is still– dispersing and safety was at the top of the list. It became the decision that we simply need to do this in a different way.”
Host Amanda Seales did her task from home. All the performances and approval speeches were also recorded from another location.
While Collins stated he enjoys “the energy of a live program,” the pre-produced format worked.
And powerful “moments,” like Beyoncé’s call to action for people to “vote like our life depends on it,” was plentiful on Sunday.
” When in doubt, do what Beyoncé states,” Collins joked. “It’s truly a good way to live your life.”
