Middlesbrough have slipped to fourth bottom of the Championship and are level on points with Hull City, who are now third bottom.

Boro, Hull and Wigan started the day level on 41 points, two clear of the drop zone.

But while Paul Cook’s in-form Latics won again, beating struggling Huddersfield 2-0 away from home, both the Tigers and Jonathan Woodgate’s men suffered home defeats to Charlton and Swansea respectively.

Luton, who are bottom, held play-off hopefuls Preston to a draw at Kenilworth Road, while Barnsley, who are 23rd, recorded a 1-0 win at QPR to edge closer to safety.

Boro are next in action at Stoke City on Saturday while Hull travel to Birmingham.

Then, on Thursday July 2, Hull host Boro at the KCOM Stadium in front of the Sky Sports cameras (ko 5pm).

The bottom 10 positions in the Championship

The two teams have only one win between them since January 1 in a total of 24 league games.

Meanwhile, Cook has been talking about Wigan’s vital win, saying: It’s just about the points on the board now.

“A clean sheet is great but the brutal reality is we need to have more points on the board. We’re on a great run but we need to keep it going.

“We want to enjoy our victory. The season ending and not being in the bottom three is the big one. I’m just focused on the next game and trying to get as many points on the board as possible.

“It looks good tonight but we’re well aware how quickly it can change.”
